For thirty years, my wife and I have upheld a cherished Christmas tradition—a journey that takes us from our home near Sacramento down to Fontana, California, where her Italian (and Lebanese) family gathers to celebrate the season. It all began in 1994 when we spent our first Christmas together, and year after year, this trip has become a cornerstone of our holiday season.

Fontana is where we gather every year to reconnect with family and continue our long-standing Christmas traditions. My wife’s family’s Italian roots shine brightly during this season, as we feast on homemade lasagna—a delicious, comforting centerpiece of our Christmas dinner. Lasagna on Christmas Day has become a constant that defines the holiday for us, and we always bring leftovers home—including meatballs.

This year marks my 30th Christmas with my wife’s family, and it feels extraordinary to reflect on the continuity of it all. Our daughter Nicole, who once made the trip with us as a child, now travels to Southern California on her own, accompanied by her boyfriend. It’s a poignant reminder of how time moves forward while traditions anchor us to what matters most.

For the past five years, another special companion has joined us on our annual trek—our dog, THOR. THOR’s energy and personality have become part of our holiday experience, and he travels well, making the journey even smoother. He’s become a beloved part of the tradition, making each Christmas even more memorable.

As we load up the car for the trip, I’m reminded of how these traditions keep us connected to family and each other. It’s not just about where we go or what we eat; it’s about the people (and pets) we share it with, the memories we create, and the love that binds us through the years. Here’s to another Christmas filled with lasagna, laughter, and the joy of family.
